An architect had an issue where they wanted a high temperature submersible pump to pump ash laden water up to 95°C in temperature from a pit. The waste water pump would need to handle being started up to 10 times an hour, as well as operate automatically depending on water level.
Solution
The architect was initially after a submersible pump, however given the fluid temperature of 95°C, Castle Pumps advised that a fully submersed pump would be unable to work. Castle Pumps instead supplied a vertical immersion pump where only the pump head is submersed in the water, and the motor is connected via an extended shaft and located above the pit on a baseplate. Our vertical immersion pumps were built to a custom length to suit the pit, and were 3.1M in length.
These vertical turbine pumps would handle the ash without problem, handling spherical solids up to 55mm in diameter and up to 25% non-abrasive solids. The pump was automatically controlled via ultrasonic level controls, set to turn on and off the pump at set levels.
A specialised motor was supplied enabling up to 12-13 pump starts per hour, complete with soft start control panel with various controls such as running and tripped lights, high level warning beacon and anti-condensation heaters.
Castle Pumps initially quoted a lead time of 6-8 weeks, however this waste water pump was ready in 5 weeks, and stored in our warehouse awaiting call off from site, enabling just in time delivery for installation when the power plant was ready to accept. Delivery had to be made following designated roads, with drivers wearing full PPE, providing notice before delivery and during specified times. All of which Castle Pumps were more than happy to comply with.
