Pumps built to withstand even the harshest of environments

Pumps built to withstand even the harshest of environments

25th January 2016

Castle Pumps understand the impact that a pump failing or breaking down can have on a company. A breakdown may lead not only to replacement or repair costs, but also the financial and reputation cost of down time and loss of productivity. For this reason, we pride ourselves on supplying pumping solutions that are built to withstand even the harshest of environments.

Whilst it is vital that quality pumps, designed and manufactured to an excellent standard are supplied, it is also key that the right pump is specified for the right application. If the performance capabilities of a pump are pushed to their limits in a certain installation, the chance of a pump failure is greater. As a specialist supplier, we will always ensure that we understand your application and the requirements before we recommend a pump.

Example one – AOD pump handling fluid at -10°C

This air operated diaphragm pump is being used to pump a sub-zero temperature monomer at -10°C. After being installed the outside of the pump became covered in an inch of ice. However, this AOD pump has been working continuously within this installation since 10th November 2015 without fault, despite the difficult operating conditions caused by the freezing temperature of the fluid.

Example two – Multistage pump transferring unfiltered mine water

This multistage pump is being used in a lignite mine to pump unfiltered mine water containing solid particles as well as lead and zinc concentrate. It is located several hundred metres underground in a particularly dusty and dirty atmosphere, yet despite these operating conditions the pump’s running has been unaffected. The below images shows how harsh the conditions of this particular mine (left) is compared to other mines where the same multistage centrifugal pump is used (right)

Example three – Marine pumps on board vessels

Pumps on board marine vessels need to be able to cope in the toughest of climates. As shown in the below image, strong winds, high waves and potential flooding are all likely conditions that mean that a durable and sturdily constructed pumping solution is vital. A large proportion of the pumps we supply are manufactured by marine pump specialist Azcue Pumps, which are specifically built to endure such conditions and have over 100 years’ worth of at-sea evidence.
