80 x Porous ceramic plates for coal ash fluidised bed
Enquiry
Castle Pumps were contacted by an existing power station customer of theirs who required replacement porous ceramic plates for a fluidised bed that was operating inefficiently as a consequence of its age. The fluidised bed was contained within a silo with a capacity of 540M³ which was designed to keep the fly ash slurry fluid. The ceramic blocks needed to be resistant to a temperature of 800°C, have the same porosity, and be manufactured to the exact same size of the existing ceramic plates to enable easy replacement during the tight maintenance window. Bonding was also required to secure the plates.
Solution
Castle Pumps Ltd has a strong engineering background enabling us to source replacement ceramic plates manufactured to the same or better specification of existing installed ceramics. We have worked closely with a ceramic manufacturer previously on another project and so contacted them again for this requirement.
Castle Pumps had replacement ceramic plates designed with the same porosity to allow the equivalent passage of air through the plates, as well as manufactured to within +-1.6mm of the existing plate size which were able to withstand temperatures up to 900°C. Drawings were supplied and signed prior to manufacture and packed accordingly in ISPM 15 lightweight wooden cases for air shipment and to protect the fragile plates. These were supplied complete with heat resistant bonding to secure the ceramic plates capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1250°C. The porous ceramic plates are currently installed and expected to remain in service for many years to come.
