Centrifugal Pumps for Seawater Injection

An engineering consultancy firm contacted us requiring four sea water injection pumps for a new industrial process. Due to their client's specification that could not be diverted from, our customer could not accept the pump to be cast in bronze for this application, which is usually the recommended material for use with sea water due to its lower cost and quicker lead times than other compatible materials. As the source of seawater was located a distance from the pump, the pump needed to be self priming.

Key challenges:

  • Compatible with seawater but couldn't be bronze
  • Capable of drawing the fluid some distance

Solution

To meet the requirements of this particular application we selected 4 of our CA 150-25 long coupled self-priming centrifugal pumps from Azcue pumps; a specialist manufacturer in pumps for sea water. As the customer was unable to accept bronze, we opted for these centrifugal pumps to be produced in stainless steel 316, a more expensive, yet non-corrosive material.

The long coupled design separates the centrifugal pump from the motor allowing easier maintenance and also reducing the risk of any fluid entering the motor in the event of a mechanical seal failure. These sea water pumps are fitted with 4 pole motors running at 1450RPM, the slower motor speed reduces the wear on the centrifugal pump in the long term, making them perfect for 24/7 applications such as this. We also supplied a 2 year recommended spare parts package to ensure no downtime during maintenance of wearing parts.
